Japanese Super Battleships by LyokoWarrior4ever Japanese Super Battleships by LyokoWarrior4ever
Battleships Yamato and Musashi the largest battleships ever created, a third ship the Shinano was laid down but halfway through its construction it was converted into an Aircraft Carrier. Both mega ships were sunk by US Task forces. Musashi sunk during Leyte Gulf and Yamato during Operation Ten-Go both were beautiful ships and it is sad to see them go down

(Edit post 2/8/14, due to some complaints I will put in typing, that I am not the original owner of this pic, Oriyoshi Ohrai is the original artist, who made this as the cover of 'The Maru Special Japanese Naval magazine back in the 80's. For those offended, thinking I had made this, I apologize here and now. That goes with most other Yamato/naval pics I post. I will do my best from now on to do so.

This is truly as masterpiece as both ships were indeed deserving of the designation battleship.

Ps I think the Iowa class battleships (USA) were the only allied battleships that stand a chance 1v1

Maybe. But remember, the Iowa was built for speed, the Yamato for just pointing its guns in one direction and saying "FUCK EVERYTHING IN THAT DIRECTION". But the Iowa could probably land more hits, as its guns were aided by computers and radar. Yamato, if it were to hit the Iowa, would probably devastate the Iowa.

Yes but let's also not forget the Iowa after the Korean war (or Vietnam) was upgraded to include cruise mussels into its arsenal and cruise missile are deadly to any armored warship like a battleship or heavy cruiser but still it'll be a close one like you said because it took 21 bombs and 17 torpedoes to sink the Yamato which is quire impressive by battle ship standards

Well, I'm talking about if the Iowa was in it's WWII state. It'd be quite a fight, thats for sure.

Besides the detail and making the battleships a sort negative space (great composition) the best thing about this is the mood. Very ominous. But these things have probably been said before. Great work!

The last of the dreadnaughts.

Relics already by the time WWII started.

Magnificent ships, though.

yeah, ironic that it was the Japanese navy that sealed her fate not once but twice, the first when they bombed pearl harbor showing that battleships could be destroyed by carrier aircraft, and again against the British sinking the repulse the  accompanying Prince of Whales i believe it was (its been awhile since i learned that sorry if its wrong) the second was Ten-go

Yep, it was the HMS Repulse and HMS Prince of Wales.

There was also the British carrier raid on the Italian navy at anchor (I forget the name).
British Swordfish crippled the Bismark to the RN could catch up and sink her.

Still, some of the greatest ships ever to sail the sea lived when they were already obsolete.

There was supposed to be an even more powerful class of battleships that was an upgraded Yamto-Class. You'll find them on Wikipedia under "Design A-150 Battleship"

When I saw the title, I was thinking of a fictional Japanese battleship named Omi.XD

Still, this is awesome! Had Japan amassed its fleets with such giant battleships, the Pacific would be under their dominion.:)

perhaps, but if we the americans still had advanced our carriers as we did, sadly the great battleships would fall as they did in the war

There was an article I read in Popular Mechanics years ago that stated that the US Navy was taking a look at reviving the battleship once their advanced weapons contracts put railguns online. Read a newer article that said the Navy was interested in field testing a railgun weapons system by next year. I think last year they test fired a 40lb projectile at mach 7. So we could see them come back in a new form.

God I wish at least one had survived the war and not been scrapped. I would have loved to walk around on one of those and see just how much larger they were compared to our Iowa classes.

They weren't "super battleships", they were there equivlant to our Iowa-class Battleship.
List of iwoa class ships:
USS Missouri
USS Iowa
USS New Jersey
USS Wissconsin
Main guns: nine 16 inch guns
Yamato class battleship armermant and ships:
The Yamato
The Musashi
and one was laid down and converted to aircraft carrier it was The Shinano
Main guns of the two: 18 inch guns the biggest put to a battleship
Those where the completed ships. The USS Missouri took two anti-ship mines=burned the panit off. Then one Kamikaze=burned paint off again and minor injures.
They weren't armored enought the japanes ships. The US were
Not trying to put you down here just facts.

The Yamato is made much larger in tonnage as compared to the Iowa. 72000 vs 57000. I guess that's where the term "super battleship" came about. But when it comes to firepower and AA effectiveness the Iowa wins.

Yeah, ever heard about the shell the main guns of the Yamato-class could fire? It was a AA shell

yeah, the beehive rounds, fired from the main guns it puts up a literal wall of AA, but it wasn't used much yet about a third of the ship's shell inventory was those beehive rounds

not to burst a bubble, but i've know that for years, but let me ask you something, if you were to ask someone who has at least heard of the ships, they would tell you they were super battleships, its not the facts people follow, its the legend and fear they installed that people remember, but i understand where your coming from, but given the choice between the two classes i will still stick by Yamato
